IMBOLC Festival is proud and delighted to announce the formation of IMBOLC Youth Folk Orchestra. This orchestra will be led and directed by Acadamh Ceoil coordinator Maggie Maguire. The orchestra is a natural development from our hugely successful annual traditional music Band Camps at IMBOLC Festival.

The aim of IMBOLC Youth Folk Orchestra is to create great music with high energy, performing imaginative arrangements and combining a musical and social stimulus for young teenagers to be involved – not to mention once-in-a lifetime opportunities to perform publicly.

Up to 70 teenage musicians from across Ireland & Scotland will be part of this youth ensemble which will premiere at IMBOLC 2020, under the baton of musician, composer and musical director Dr. Ryan Molloy.

Ryan Molloy’s work has been performed to international audiences on four continents as a composer and performer. In demand as an accompanist, Ryan has recorded over a dozen albums with noted artists such as Enda & Fergal Scahill, Paul Brock, Dave Munnelly and David Doocey, to name only a few. With a repertoire spanning many genres, Ryan’s expertise extended from traditional Irish music to contemporary classical music. Ryan currently lectures in composition at Maynooth University.

Young people from across the county are invited to become involved in this innovative project by completing and submitting an application form by October 25th 2019.

Successful applicants will be invited to rehearsals which will be held between November 2019 and February 2020. The IMBOLC Youth Folk Orchestra will perform at IMBOLC Festival in Derry on Saturday 8th February 2020.
